We have been
using ARTistic Pursuits, Inc. for the last few weeks in our homeschool. I cannot say enough good things about Sculpture Technique Construct, but I’ll attempt a few.
We used the book and as we were working on it, I kept saying "I wish I would have used this
earlier in our homeschool!" I had art in
school, but I am a left-brain person with little creativity for “artsy”
programs. This books works well with ages
9 and up, approximately.
I love this
program as it is for any homeschooler looking for a stress-free, easy to
follow, comprehensive, and fun art curriculum.
ARTistic
Pursuits has books for all ages and skill levels, but sculpture Technique
Construct is what we are reviewing.
We find that
ARTistic Pursuits Construct book is a wonderful addition and complements our
Eclectic/Charlotte Mason leaning philosophy of home education.
A peek at the lessons:
I chose to
highlight and work with wire because we found working with wire to be extremely
entertaining. We learned a tremendous amount about this type of sculpting. A
Unique Introduction to the World of Sculpting by Brenda Ellis with contemporary
Art by Working Sculptors starts with Unit 1: Creating Form in Papermaking. Unit
2: Creating Planes in Cardboard, Unit 3: Creating Motion with Papier-mache,
Unit 4: Creating Volume With Wire. All of these topics can be found in a spiral
bound book.
We chose
wire because I could find several gauges locally. The kids thought this route would be a great
first step. There is a short discussion
about volume and wire sculpture. In addition, we read an introduction to an
artist and his time period and art style which uses wire and metal. It then
lists materials needed to work with wire, tools needed and any safety and basic
instructions.
Here is an
example of the process of creating wire art:
We purchased
16-gauge wire; and went thru the lesson and here are some snapshots of the
final products.
Hannah calls it: "I can fly Jack!"
Jacob's Top Hat Creation:
They loved
it!
We will
continue to use the ARTistic Pursuits in our home. It is such a well written,
well presented easy program to use and implement. The content is interesting, age appropriate,
yet challenging for all ages and skill levels.
Even with a
son who is more reluctant to do art, he found the lessons easy to follow and
enjoyed using the tools with wire. My
daughter, who could do art all day long, found the lessons were fun; she
enjoyed doing something with wire she never thought of before.
Finally, I appreciated
that I can feel more confident teaching the children art by using ARTistic
Pursuits. It allowed me to bring art appreciation and art curriculum into our
home where it was lacking. I do believe
that children who are exposed to art are more well-rounded and are more able to
build their expressionistic and creative sides.
When they are, they grow and excel in other areas of life and academics.
