Here to Help Learning Review

Here to Help Learning is an online writing program We primarily reviewed Flight 3 Essay Writing which is an online, independent writing program for a family or a group. It is perfect for a group class or individuals in need of an instructor full of energy and very enthusiastic about writing.

The airport theme uses Mrs. Beth Mora as a “flight attendant” and even when not in costume, she is fun and full of energy. The basset hound is the “pilot” and leads children into the flying solo lessons. The lessons are easy to use, I just printed each worksheets and hit play on each lesson.  One can teach different ages together if there are only a few grade levels among them. That is what I did in our household.  The lessons include Christian memory verses; mentions of faith in God is used throughout, and they ask you to pray if you are having problems and then continue.  Mrs. Mora interviewed Christian authors, which was our favorite portion of the lessons.
During the essay writings, children learned literary techniques.  Similes, metaphors, setting the mood when writing and other methods help older students expand their understanding of the writing process. Group lessons are most effective because they encouraged interaction through games and activities.

Kids that finish their assignments can earn “Discovery Tickets,” which are awards that students earn and a family can do together, i.e. extra field trip or outing.

Writing processes are made fun by working on and learning the writing process. The team emphasizes brainstorming, webbing, writing the rough drafts, getting feedback, writing 2nd drafts, getting more input; writing the final version of the book, then publishing by sharing the written work in some fashion.  Mora uses body motions with these processes in order to get the children engaged, which helps them remember the process.
Each student created a binder where they put their lesson pages for each week along with completed work. There is a section in the binder for students to insert a 36 page “Language Helps Booklet” that is found in the student workbook. This is intended to be a handy reference for questions on composition and grammar.
Each lesson is divided into video segments that march students through each part of the lesson in a particular order. The videos even tell you when to pause the video. Children watching, must pay attention to the video; in order to know what they are to do at each step.
The entire production is extremely professional with high end graphics. The writing prompts are geared toward younger students. For example, most writing prompts are silly, photo-shopped images such as a bear on a skyscraper.
My children found the lessons to be a little childish and too silly.  I liked how they could work on the writing assignments independently, until they conference with an adult about their rough drafts.  I found that some of the videos are very similar to all other segments and the redundancy is not as cute after a few times.

SUMMARY:

In conclusion, Here to Help Learning is great for those younger students that need an entertaining way of presenting the writing process. Older students will get a good grasp of the writing process to create their own book.
