We had the pleasure of
reviewing Sunya Publishing: Sunya – The Magic and Wonder of Math and Science
Multiplying & Dividing.
Sunya pronounced “Soonya” is
a fun card game that allows children to play together or independently to learn
and memorize their multiplication facts. The object of the game is to get a
Sunya or be empty handed of any cards.
Sunya is a card game in
which players try to complete number sentences; each game can be either multiplication
or division using up the numbered cards in their hands. As in UNO, players draw
cards until something can be played. Luckily
the range of values is small enough that we seldom ended up with the fistful of
cards. The game is practical and functional and a nice break from drills and
flashcards. Sunya is a great way to
encourage children who are learning their math facts to practice them
independently of the instructor.
Initially I was surprised to see that there was a booklet with the game. After reading the clear instructions, we dove in. It was really very simple and the book dedicated approximately 2 pages to the history of math acknowledgment, introduction and rules of the game. The booklet included variations of games and their instructions.
Toward the end of the
booklet, they have included information of the modern number system and its
origin, glossary and famous math quotes. The booklet is a bit thick for a simple game. Sunya
could summarize the game more easily and just add a few additional cards with
the rules of the game.
Another surprise included
was a group cards that had riddles with funny stories. These riddles have made the kids and I think!
Our brains were really moving!
I would suggest this be in
everyone’s home that has children of early elementary to middle school
ages.
This invaluable game will
help engage students on their own or with their friends.
