We received a Lifetime Membership to Homeschool Copywork which enables us to access a variety of e-books for copywork and notebooking pages such as van Gogh, da Vinci, and the Wright Inventors.
Both Jacob and Hannah dove headfirst into the copywork. We downloaded the e-books titles of van Gogh, da Vinci, Charlotte Bronte and inventors Wilbur and Orville Wright.
We critiqued and analyzed the artwork of van Gogh as they wrote in cursive various quotes.
Although
copywork, narration and dictation are not difficult concepts, I struggled with how to
implement them effectively during the review period. By utilized this site, I have learned about these
valuable tools of learning and how to best implement a classical education.
What is
copywork? Copywork is the act of writing down, word for
word, a sentence or passage from the source. The goals: excellent penmanship,
accurate punctuation and capitalization, discussion of sentence structure, and
English grammar for late elementary and early middle school years.
In each copywork
e-book it details history and biography of the subjects. With van Gogh e-book, we marveled at his works
of art in vivid color. I loved the idea of getting some history and art
appreciation integrated within the copywork.
One example of
the copy work included information about Wilbur and Orville Wright. Amy’s
description of the Wright book states “The brothers Wilbur and Orville Wright
were amazing inventors who seized upon an idea when they were very young and
never gave up!” This beautiful copy work e-book provided 177 pages of copywork
quotes for and included each line style so there is something for everyone,
from writing for the very young to Middle school and High school cursive.
What is
dictation? Dictation is the act of writing words or
sentences that are read outloud and then written by the student. The parent can give the sentence that has
been copied so that the student can check their work.
What
is narration? An
oral or written narration is the act of telling back something that the reader
read or something that was read to him/her. Narration can be tough! It requires
excellent listening skills. For younger students or beginners start by reading
one or two sentences from the Homeschool Copywork e- book. Reading the passages
to them first and then have them copy the sentence within the e-book. Siblings
could read to one another. This is a way to help not only in listening skills
from siblings but helps them to check their own work and expand their
imagination.
Summary:
Amy creator of
Homeschool Copywork homeschools her six children. She and her family live in Southern
California.
I find that
Homeschool copywork should be a part of nearly every homeschool that values all
aspects of eclectic learning. Students will learn not only penmanship and grammar
but science, and art. I believe this no hassle; active learning e-book curriculum
builds a lifelong way of learning.
